It all started when Ellen outsourced her dating admin to a trusted colleague, who promptly matched her with Alex.
She lured him in with a delightfully confusing manifesto about her "zest for life" and lemons, to which Alex wisely agreed that limoncello is delicious.
One citrus-themed date in Sydney later, and the zest was history. They now make their own homemade limoncello, and it's pretty good.
Alex quickly learned that Ellen's "zest" translated to marathon and triathlon training.
In what Ellen considers a series of high-stakes "husband tests" Alex passed with flying colours, showing up at finish lines, joining her for runs and rides, and logging countless kilometres in the pool.
What started as moral support snowballed into a half marathon, a full marathon, multiple sprint triathlons, a standard triathlon, and a Half Ironman. That was the moment Ellen knew she didn't just have a boyfriend, she had a teammate who was officially hooked.
From wine tasting in Orange to meeting the families, their worlds collided perfectly. There were trips away with friends, camping, canyoning through the Blue Mountains, and Ellen even got enlisted to assist with some terrifying hang gliding launches.
The ultimate stress test came next: their first overseas trip to Canada to compete in the Half Ironman, proving they could survive international travel, athletic endurance, and shared suitcases.
It was a massive success, and on returning home, they moved in together and life settled into a happy rhythm.
The "Big Talk" about a ring had been happening for a while, so much so that Ellen was dangerously close to announcing the engagement before it existed.
Sensing he had to move fast, Alex took her for a sunset swim at Maroubra. Despite the cold and with a bit of persuasion, they went for a walk along the cliffs.
As the sun dipped below the horizon, he got down on one knee, making sure he was the one to break the news first.
With a ring on the finger and a trip to Taiwan on the horizon, a new dream started brewing. Then, on a layover in Ho Chi Minh City, a face appeared on the screen: Zeus.
The plan was "just one", but you can't have a Zeus without a Goose.
Our future is now officially Golden; filled with morning coffee walks, chaotic trips to the dog park, homemade limoncello, and coming home late to wake up two very sleepy pups for cuddles.
